I just turned on the Maryland-Miami football game and saw the new heraldic Terp uniforms:

The helmets are half Calvert and half Crossland from the Maryland state arms and flags, with matching shoulders on each side. They’re getting trashed by the TV talking heads, but heraldry fans have to cheer!

..sorta.

Even the gloves, armbands and pads on either side of player had the same pattern.

If you saw the game and were observant enough to notice the shoes they were wearing, they would be best described as semy of the Maryland arms.

Darn, beat me to it!  Started another thread under academic.  I guess the mods can delete mine if they want to.

Notice the shoes as well?

yuck. problem is, imo, this team has 32 different uniforms/combinations to use this year. while i like the nod to the heraldry of the state in this version…it is just one piece in an ugly, ugly trend in sports. tradition out the window…on with the new and ever weirder (you should see their turtle shell helmets).

It’s just plain awful.  Those uniforms are not pleasant to look at.  Funny, when I was growing up I always thought Maryland’s flag was the worst in the union.  I always thought it was really ugly and made no sense.  Then, when I got older I realized the heraldry in it and really grew to love it.  But, seeing it on the uniforms like this makes me kind of hate it again.  LOL.  Not a good use of heraldry.

Actually, I really don’t think it’s any worse a use of heraldry than this:

It’s basically the same thing.

Heralds playing football (real football, that is, also known as soccer) or rugby, perhaps?

England vs. Scotland? Bit of a challenge to tell the teams apart, but that’s just part of the fun!

i like the attempt to incorporate the state’s arms in a uniform. however, when it comes to this teams football uniforms it is just awful. but, again, this is a growing trend at all levels. thank you no, you can keep them. give me the solid/traditional one color one metal, or as close as one can get, ideal of places like Notre Dame, Nebraska, Alabama, CU, CSU, Air Force, Army, Stanford, Tennessee, etc. and keep it that way forever or a very long time. they have to quit changing uniforms every other year and certainly pick one set of colors—preferably those of the university (insert city, state, etc) they represent.

having more than one home and one away and maybe one alternate bothers me. having 32 different ones like Maryland and 40 plus like Oregon is just wrong. plus these multi-colored attempts at multi-dimensionalism on uniforms just bug the bejeezes outta me.

i did not allow my competitive (traveling) youth football team to have a weird/modern design uniform. i advised them we will be using the blue, orange and white only and it will be traditional jerseys and pants. no little swooshes, arrowed spikes, etc. but, i am old fashioned and traditional on such things so i am biased against them to begin with.

Doesn’t matter. We’ll call it what we like. How many crickets are employed in a cricket match?
