While I love owning proper books as much as the next man (well actually more than most) I’m finding that the riches that are available online are immense and I thought that I’d share.

Most of these books are from Internet Archive. Certainly from the UK it is a better source than Googlebooks because the PDFs are generally searchable and the books whole books. Google is a pain in the **** with its partial views &c :banghead:

Unfortunately, Internet Archive seems to be adding a lot of these Google listings, but all of the links below should be to pages that give access to full texts.

I give no guarantees on that front nor to the usefulness of the volumes. Some, like the Seymour book are bucket-shop. BTW if anyone can find volume 1 of Lode & Archdall, please let me know.

James

Thanks for the links, may I point out that for example the wappenbuch des Königreichs Bayern consists of more then 1 volume, always look under more editions and check which volume you are downloading.

Another point if you want to download more from google books and you are not American (who have relaxter copy right laws) then download the program hotspot shield, if you run this program it will alter your IP adress to an American IP adress and you will have acces to more pdf files.

Thanks for the list.

I’ve just found the following long (but unorganised) list of links and references to heraldry-related web pages and online documents, which may be of interest:

Thanks for the list.  Am I the only one who finds these hard to read?  Is there any way to zoom in on the pages to effectively increase the font size?

ETA:  Never mind- I suppose I could just download the pdf intead of using the "flip-book" option, and then I can zoom as I please…..

Yes, I couldn’t find any way to zoom in on the flip book. But if you simply open the PDF rather than saving the file onto your computer, it might be faster.

I took the liberty of snaffling James’s list and adding a few more.  The combined results can be seen at:

Thanks for the links, they’re definitely something I’ll be checking out further.  I wasn’t aware of all the material avaliable online either.  I’m just an old fashion paper and ink kind of guy I guess haha.

Without checking duplications in lists the following lists and links are useful -

Visitations by county:

https://sites.google.com/site/cochoit/home/visitations

Harleian Society series:

https://sites.google.com/site/cochoit/home/visitations/harleian-society-visitation-series

Visitation links:

Thanks to the regulars on soc.genealogy.medieval for these.

I’m not sure how I missed this thread.  We have some of the English visitation links on the AHS site (http://www.americanheraldry.org/pages/index.php?n=Ancestral.England) but not all of them.  I’ll try to find time to add those pointed out here to that page.

I have always found links to online heraldry books extremely useful.  Would it be possible for the AHS webmaster to create a page of links?  Then I don’t have to worry about my bookmarks getting lost (which happened recently when my harddrive crashed).
