I just received a copy of Simple Heraldry Cheerfully Illustrated by Iain Moncreiffe and Don Pottinger. I absolutely love it!
It is a great way to explain the basic concepts of heraldry to a novice. This will come in handy with my newly wedded wife and hopefully our children in the future.
I love this book! I always recommend to anyone interested in a good, solid, basic knowledge of heraldry. Need to get a copy of my own. Congrats!!!
I think its great. I got it off of ebay for 9 dollars plus shipping.
I found this book at my favorite bookstore in Salt Lake (which deals with all sorts of used and rare books). It’s one of my favorites, mostly because of the "cheerful illustrations".
My library has it, though I’ve never checked it out—I don’t think it’s been checked out since the 70s and I keep hoping it will show up in their sale section.
I have looked through it there, however. It really is charming.
It is, indeed, a charming book…and a wonderful primer for novices (especially young people). If any of you don’t have a copy, add it to your "wish list." (Got mine on eBay several years ago for $4…they are out there.)
I have this great book as well. Like most of you I had to get it used. It is truly a shame that so many of the good books on heraldry can only be acquired used.
I just looked online, and my town library does have a copy. I’ll check it out the next time I’m there with the kids.
Jared thank you for posting some pictures. I read this thread last night and was trying to see what the book looked like to see if I wanted to purchase it. Now that I have seen some pictures I think I will buy it.
Also available used at Amazon.co.uk for a single penny. The postage will be more but hey .... a penny.
Remember that when you order from Amazon.com through the AHS "Basic Heraldic Bookshelf" page, http://www.americanheraldry.org/pages/index.php?n=Books.Bibliography

Oh I wish I would have seen this earlier. I ordered the book from Amazon earlier this afternoon ($4.75 with free shipping). That’s good to know for next time though as I’m I’ll order more heraldry books from there.

i didn’t know this either. i’m sure my fault overlooking it, but perhaps we should advertise this better because i didn’t know of it either and that coulda helped with some of the purchases i’ve made over the years.
It’s on the web site, but I always thouth it would be good to have the "click" in the upper banner on all pages. But given the "volunteer" nature of our forum and I’m not the one doing any of the work… I try not to be too suggestive.
While we are on the subject of heraldry books… Has anyone thought of taking all the content of the current AHS, putting them in .pdf or appropriate format and selling them as a Kindle book? Personally, I wouldn’t mind at all including that reference in my kindle collection when I am not online. The content exists as it is, publishing a Kindle book or ebook appears to be relatively easy and it could generate a little more revenue for the society. I’m unsure I’d make it some huge amount, but .... Just a thought - for the volunteers who are already carrying the load for us…
i just made four new purchases using those buttons. i hope that got credited to AHS. i had to replace a couple and decided to pick up a couple, so why not?
