I thought I’d post this picture of the ‘heraldry’ used by Sierra Pacific High School in Hanford, CA where my daughter goes to school. It’s printed on some of their souvenir and fund raising items and on their website.

They’d better beware of using the Olympic rings as the IOC can get very litigious about use of their "brand" See here. On the positive side, perhaps that’s an "in" to getting something a little more heraldic.

After all the current version has some reasonable (if not original) elements.

Well as a logo the IOC rings are only protected in a specific form (I guess the rings must be coloured) so all black rings would be OK.

Agreed.  Moreover it will be a long time before Established 2009 is in any way prestigious and the sort of thing to advertise.

Being established in 1868 is no great statement of antiquity either, yet the University of California sees fit to put that date on its corporate seal.  Everything has to start somewhere, and putting a truthful date of foundation on an organization’s marks of identity reflects a commendable intention that the institution should endure.

The Established 2009 is a result of having to carve out an identity in a town with 2 high schools that have been around for a long time, both of which have the town name in their name. Sierra Pacific doesn’t of course and people are still learning that we’re part of the district. To make it a little worse both the other school’s mascots are named after dogs, Bullpups and Huskies, and SP went with Golden Bears (as Cal Berkeley does).

The new kid on the block feels the need to distinguish themselves.

Upon further reflection, I agree with your statement.  The date of establishment probably should be in their official seal.  However I would still say that if they are trying to have a set of arms then they should stay strictly heraldic rather than mix in other elements such as establishment dates.

Is there any reason why the date can’t be put below the arms prehaps in a separate sub-banner which is distinctly separate from the arms?  So long as the date is included below the arms, I think the high school can still show the date of its establishment without violating heraldic good taste with regards to the arm.  Alternatively the date can be placed in a smaller banner above the crest.

Go Huskies!

My daughter was a junior Husky and would have been a Husky in HS if we hadn’t moved her to the new school. At first we wished the her school wopuld have stayed with the ‘dog’ theme but now we’re used to Golden Bears.
