I saw something in print or on line the other day about Boy Scouts earning a badge for morse code. They probably have to research what the telegraph is / was, first?

Not necessarily.  Morse code can also be transmitted by flashing light, flag, air horn or whistle, even (for simple messages) smoke signals.

Yes, I know. I was just taking Richard’s example of rapidly obsolescent technology a step further back.  None of your examples is unknown to scouts, today….
