I recently visited the Shelburne Museum in Vermont and was pleasantly surprised to see some fine examples of heraldry.

Images can be viewed here:

I’m trying to get in the habit of posting interesting heraldry tidbits more often in my social media outlets. My Facebook is private, but I do publish heraldry snapshots to the public via Google+

Here is a favorite:

This is printed on a chair in the Electra Havemeyer Webb Memorial building, which recreates the interiors of her Park Avenue, NYC apartment. I don’t know much about the chair or the arms, but she did marry into the Vanderbilt Family.

The motto below the shield reads: "Vincit Amor Patria"

Very nice.  Whatever the arms are, it’s not Vanderbilt.  Might be worth checking under Webb and Havemeyer in some of the standard U.S. armorials.

Joseph,

Certainly the arms as painted upon the back of this hall chair would appear not to belong to either the Webb or Havemeyer families when looking at the pages of Bolton’s Armory.

A nicely painted coat of arms.  Quarters II & III might be Cudlow of Suffolk (Argent, three boars heads couped Gules), and the inescutcheon could be Fowkes (Azure, a fleur de lis Argent; on a chief indented of the second a lion passant Gules).  Mrs Havemeyer Webb may have acquired the chair with the arms already on it, rather than have had them painted on herself

I’m pretty sure those are fish in the first and fourth quadrants.

I believe the clue to the identification of the 1st and 4th quarters is the motto: ‘Vincit amor patriae’ [The love of my country exceeds everything].  Amongst many families, this motto is used the Gun family.  The Guns of Raltoo, Co. Kerry bear this motto along with their arms: ‘Argent three cannon barrels fesswise proper’.  When looking at the 1st and 4th quarters as painted on the back of these hall chairs they have always struck me as cannon barrels or chambers rather than fish.  Undoubtedly, we have here a variant of the Gun arms: ‘Azure a chevron ermine between three cannon barrels fesswise or’ as is evidenced by the fact that these arms were quartered as their 2nd and 3rd quarters by the family of Gun-Cuninghame, of Mount Kennedy, Co. Wicklow.

Oh, thank goodness. I thought all along that they looked like cannons, but I couldn’t find any arms with them (granted I didn’t look very hard). It’s good to know that I was on the mark. smile
