Yea - my arms are original - not differenced. For what it’s worth, Mr. Woodson, there are days I regret having the bordure or wish I had gone engrailed (to mirror the escallops) instead.

I also briefly considered adding a bordure counterchanged to my arms to “frame” them out.  But since that was completely aesthetic and didn’t add anything to my design rationale, I decided against it – and I’m rather glad that I did.

You got me thinking (and I know it’s ‘sorta’ backwards thinking) but I could register the arms "In Memoriam", sans bordure for my granddad.

I concur!  That would also allow you to share these arms with all of your co-descendants of your grandfather.

Yes, you could - as long as you aren’t in direct 1st line of male descent.  And by default the 1st line male descent would have arms.. then establish this as a difference…

But why Grandfather and not Dad?

In memorium of his Grandfather would add his uncles/aunts & first cousins and their desndants; in memorium of his ad would only add his siblings & nephews/nieces etc.

If you go either route (father or grandfather), I’d present it to your family with a more traditional rendition, though, so it looks more like a coat of arms and less like a logo.

I’m just sayin’ is all.

No, Kenneth I agree with you 100%

this rendition does does look more like a logo or even a tatoo (with mantling, crest, banner)

but to me that’s the fun of it…...how many different ways and styles it can be rendered

Also kathy My thinking was :about the line of succession( Please correct me if I’m Wrong) Grandad (who has since passed) -coat of arms, Dad would have arms with label which would have been removed upon passing and he would have assumed same arms, with me having arms with a difference (the Bordure) Similar to Michael’s point

However, if you are the first born, you would get the label as well (while your father has the original design).  If you are the 2nd child (or later), then you could use the border as a difference to start a new branch on the family tree.

Michael,

The only situation where your using the bordure would be questionable would be if you are the eldest son of the eldest son of your grandfather.  In that circumstance, you’d be expected to inherit your grandfather’s arms without difference.

Generally:

First Generation:

Grandad = Original

Second Generation:

First son - Label of 3 until granddad’s death, then original

Second Son - Differenced from Granddad’s, depends on country you want to emulate (if any)

etc…

Third Generation:

First Son’s Children:

Son One - Label of 5 until granddad’s death, then label of 3 until first son’s death, then original

Son Two - Differenced from granddad’s, depends on country emulation

If you are in the line of a "second son" or 3rd, 4th. 5th, etc… Then the bordure could be that line’s difference…  But if you are in the line of first sons directly to your granddad - You will ultimately have his original arms.

I like your arms and the countercharged bordure—even if you are a rookie :p
