The Appletons were there (David speaking) as was Charles Drake (speaking) Michael Medvedev (speaking) and me (speaking). Apologies to any others I’ve not mentioned.

The usual friendly crowd, and decent set of papers in the heraldry section (I ended up not attending any of the genealogical ones - a first). A lovely city too with more to see than the rather tight congress schedule allowed for (and the rain tended to hold off during lunch and in the evening).

For those on FB, I’ve posted a heap (and do I mean a heap, well over 100) photos of heraldry and other stuff. There is still more to come. I’d post some here but I’m almost on my limit for images. Any way of increasing this?

Given that a good few people on the forum are not on FB, as a little experiment, below one of the Maastricht photos from my FB album. Chosen because it’s spectacular (though there *is* heraldry if you look close enough).

BTW, how much does doing a link like this eat the site’s bandwidth?

It is flattering that I was mentioned among the AHS men, although I am only a frequent guest here on the AHS’s forum.

The Congress was apparently a success. By the way I met some of the participants in Uppsala in 1992, during my first Congress. A sentimental anniversary. I took the 1992 Congress bag with me, although I did not use it much smile but this did not spoil the rest of the pleasures.

I wouldn’t worry too much about red stars, or stars on a red field—they both pre-date the johhy-come-lately Bolshies.  We have a red star (along with the grizzly bear) on the California state flag, dating from IIRC the 1840’s —and I seem to recall that it was taken from an earlier red-star flag of a failed revolt of a faction of the Californios unhappy with Mexican rule.

I also would not, but the personal experience is a powerful thing. Well, I do not generalise smile
