I thought you may find this link interesting.  It shows a rejected proposal for a flag for the Confederate States designed by one William T. Riddle, of Eutaw, Alabama featuring a shield described on the website thus: “the first quarter of the shield has seven stars for the original Confederate States; the second and third quarters each show a cotton plant in natural colors on a black ground; and the fourth quarter adds stars for States entering the Confederacy after the first seven”
