A hurt is by definition a roundel Azure.

Thanks Joe & Father, I didn’t know that. I’d seen bezant before and some others, but not hurt. For others who might be in my boat:

Some less-traditionalists would just as soon say "roundel Azure" or "roundel Or" rather than "Hurt" or "bezant" for greater clarity (& to avoid errors if we misremember which is which!).  Of course even then one needs to know the traditional English terms so we can read blazons that use them.

I know, I know. I’m exactly one year late in responding. But I’ve been looking over the boards to see what was discussed before I joined the forum.

Since both an orle and an escutcheon take the shape of the parent shield, wouldn’t a better blazon be:

Gules an orle Argent on an escutcheon Azure a mullet of the second.

That would certainly lend itself to a nicer rendition if the shield shape were changed.  I suppose the only problem might be if an orle would not be thick enough.

It was mentioned earlier that in the older comics, Capt’s shield was of different design.  There were a couple designs but the one the stands out before the round shield is his "1940" shield as seen below.  I will see if I can find the others as well.
