Even if Gen. Patton’s immigrant ancestor assumed the surname for some reason, if he (or his family) were to have assumed arms in the Scottish style, they would have been as "indeterminate cadets/strangers in blood" to the Scottish Patons.  The main patterns I’ve seen were either Azure three crescents Argent (with variations such as the sword mentioned earlier) or Sable three crescents and a chief Argent with various differences.  Either of these "stem" designs would be naturals for differencing.
