After an influx of funery restorations, I’ve decided to take a few days to catch up on heraldry work. The first off the block is my latest design for Gordon Fisher, a retired Colonel with the Salvation Army which I thought I would share.

Arms: Per fess ogive counter-ogive per pale Argent and Sable; three icthyus in fess haurient, counter haurient all counterchanged.
Crest Out of a wreath Sable doubled Argent, an icthyus counter-haurient Gules between a double fishook bend pointed and barbed Or.
Motto: A FISHER OF MEN
The rationale is quite complex theologically, but essentally:
Field Argent and Sable = light and dark, good and evil etc. Parted per ogive is a reflection on his Anglican heritage.
The icthyus puns on the surname and also indicates his role as a Minister of Religion. The centre one moving in the opposite direction reflects his favorite verse "Be in the world but not of it" and also Christ, who came to live among men (hence the counterchange). Being three in number is representative of the Trinity.
The Crest is representative of three parts,
1.The fish hook catching the fish (obvious)
2. Open arms receiving the Lord / Holy Spirit
3. A play on his favorite song "Lift up the Lord"
The motto is once again a play on his surname and is reflective of his life and work. It is paraphrased from Mark 1:17, when Christ called his first Disciples
What wonderfully simple and beautiful arms! Is this design your invention Sandy? If so I am quite impressed!
Thanks. The ogive partition is based on an idea from CHA but the rest of the design is mine.
Very nice symbology. The simplest arms can so often have so much symbolism in them.
Absolutely superb, Sandy.
(And, since I can’t resist, made even better by the lack of:
1. Any obvious borrowing of symbols peculiar to the Salvation Army.
2. A clerical hat, even though officers of the SA are ordained ministers.)
Thanks Joseph,
Where possible I try not to include obvious references unless specifically asked for (ie my Father-in-Law). As for the hats, that’s an area I’m staying clear of (for the moment) .
Striking, unique and beautifully rendered.
Sandy,
It is an absolutely beautiful design…striking, to say the least.
Once again, Sandy has proven that "simple, yet intricate" is not an oxymoron. Well done!

I don’t blame you. I’d do the same.
A striking design, beautifully executed!
Bravo! Well done! I love the symbolism, and I love the canting! Wonderful job!
