FWIW the custom of bynames isn’t unique to Quebec.  In 16th century Scottish records I have John M’Cartney alias Red John—apparently a redhead; and another in the same family "called Wattis John"—which I take to mean John son of Walter.

(Not ancestors AFAIK but names I’ve run across trying to trace the descent of an interesting Scots family of the same surname)

 

I would echo JdL’s suggestion to include one or more hearts as a canting charges to the "dit" byname, replacing one or more of the other charges in your proposed design.  Then post on the fridge for several weeks to see if it grows on you…
