.. to help a po’ country boy out? :( . Maybe a little charge of the actual State? or the Blue/tan/Green sheild of the State seal? Maybe nothing/as is? Anything but a ‘buckle’.

The project: I have zero artistic ability and couldn’t draw a straight line if my life depended on it. I am good at coming up with paint designs and color scheme for painting cars at my shop but have to depend on the painter to understand the desired effect and bring it to life. That said, the goal here is to come up with Mantling, Crest and Helm that the Lord Lyon of Scotland might, just maybe, find acceptible.

The Crest: Since I have gone with an Americana theme, I might as well continue. If I am going to be rejected for one, I might as well be rejected for two. I would like to use a bust of an American Pitbull Terrier. Other Duncans’ before me have used Grayhounds (ref. above link to Duncan armorial). I asked my friends to name 3 things that ‘I was all about’. They came up with Mopars, Pitbulls and something we will not mention… ahem. I don’t think the LL would go for a 69 Hemi Charger so a Pitbull it is. I currently own 9 Pitbulls, thanks to a new litter of 7. I have owned Pitbulls long before most even heard of them and before they got the negative rep..  The Pitbull in my Crest SHALL NOT have fangs showing, a spiked collar, or a dog-fighting mean look. Pitbulls are a Strong, Well-defined and Noble American breed of dog. For more info and pictures of Pitbulls go here and look at American Staffordshire Terriers; American Bulldogs; and Pitbulls. (all 3 are basically the same dogs, mine are actually Am.Staffs like Nebula & Eowyn in the AmStaff photos). Pitbulls are cross-breed mongrols just like Americans, both are now a ‘New’ breed.

The Mantling: I have no idea what to do here. I do like Black & Red drapes myself but… Somewhere in the Mantling I would like to incorperate my 3 little ‘Lucky Charms’... (you know, as in Lucky Charms Cereal?) to pay tribute to my other National Heritages. (I have no idea how this would go over with LL, but… it’s going to be in there somewhere, even if it’s ‘hidden’).

Irish - A shamrock???

German - an Iron Cross???

Ukrainian - ??? wheat like on a wheat penny???

There will also be a 4th ‘Lucky Charm’ that has a personal meaning to me, of a religious nature and should be seperate from the other 3. It will look something like one of these:

It will be a Red ‘doughnut’ Circle on black, a red charge inside the circle with a small gold charge (a 7 pointed star of single crossing lines). You would have to contact me in private if you want to see it, but a red circle on black would do for now. Examples of Scot mantling in use now can be found here:

Motto: End the Suffering

Helm: (can a non-knight have a Helm?... I’ll have to check.) I thought some of the Helmuts in Gladiator and Troy looked pretty kewl, but again I’m clueless… something nasty looking? Does it have to be a trational Helmut or could it be a semi-open faced helmut with a blue-painted face of a Pictish Warrior behind it?

Whatever the final rendition looks like, it will have to meet 3 basic requirements:

1. I have to like it.

2. John Duncan of Sketraw, the chairman of the Duncan Society, should not find it objectionable. If he does then the Lord Lyon most certainly will.

3. Lord Lyon might, just maybe might, accept it. I’m not afraid of testing the bounds of tradition. He can change it as he likes.
