As I mentioned in my birthday thread, I recently acquired some Prismacolor markers and color pencils. I decided to practice getting use to them by doing various crests - my "crest series" as I’ve been informally calling it. Don’t feel sorry if yours was left out; I couldn’t possible have done everyone’s, so I just did a few that looked interesting.
Any errors in the emblazon may or may not be intentional. I tried to follow the blazon, but I sort of let my imagination run its own show since these emblazons were not commissioned. They are posted in the order I made them, so it might be possible to notice slight changes as I refined my technique. Btw, the scanner bed was a bit dirty, I think, because there are dark specks on the images were there are none in actuality. I tried to remove some of them, but again since this isn’t an actual commission, I didn’t worry too much about cleaning the digital image. Also, scanners doesn’t do the colors justice as I’m sure some of you are aware.
I don’t claim to be a master at this… about the only thing I do think I’m a master of now is sharpening Prismacolor pencils. So, feel free to criticize as harshly as you like; I’ll still like you… after all, charity is a virtue I’m supposed to embody.

Denny
Denny put up with my myriad of questions, so I felt like I ought to do something a bit more special. The big empty spaces of his Irish crown provided the perfect place to add in some unique details. Unfortunately, I lacked a sharp enough pencil to make clean lines, but I think as it is, the results are good. I’ll let you all determine what is being represented. I think the scan is good enough for them to be distinguished.

Rev. William Henry
For those of you who are liturgically minded, no, that is not a Catholic priest, but yes, that is a remarkably fiddle-back looking chasuble. In honor of our Lutheran friend, the priest figure in his crest is modelled on an Icelandic Lutheran priest (pictured here). I am blissfully unfamiliar with the divisions within the Lutheran community, so I hope I haven’t offended you, reverend. I played with several different head orientations, but I settled on looking heavenward, so please let me know if that’s the impression you get. I didn’t have any model to copy from and it’s not exactly an angle one can do in the mirror.

Continued in next post.
Kenneth Mansfield
No offence to anyone, but I enjoyed drawing his rodent the most.

PM me, I noticed a tincy-wincy error on your member’s arms page (not heraldic, don’t worry).

Edward Ploysongsang
I’m not altogether happy with the shading on the moon, but I’ve never done it before. So, if anyone has tips, they’re much appreciated.
My apologies for not actually doing the shading on the torse. I was getting a bit short on time and wanting to wrap this series up, and I didn’t noticed this until I had scanned the image. I may go back and add those last touches later, but at the moment I didn’t feel like it. I also recently had the pleasure of doing a membership certificate for Dr. Ploysongsang. I hope you liked it… I hope they’ve given it to you by now.

Daniel, these are fantastic. I particularly like the way you have rendered the highlights on Stephen’s crest. There is only one criticism I would make, and I’m assuming you aren’t an ornithologist, so just file this away for future reference. The wings seem to consist of tail feathers, or at the very least they are missing the flight feathers (the pointy ones).
Great work all in all.

Wow. I got distracted and before I could hit "submit" a lot more crests showed up. You’ve been busy.
I love the groundhog, Daniel. Glad you enjoyed drawing him.
Again, great work.
Superb work, Daniel! Truly impressive!
Take care,
Philip Blanton
I’m not althogether happy with the tail and mane of this horse, but this was my first horse so I was playing with ideas.

Jonathan Baker
This is the second time I’ve done Mr. Baker’s crest. I wasn’t totally impressed by my last attempted - I just had to out do myself.

Patrick Williams
This was one of the more difficult ones since I couldn’t find any consistent description of a Japanese fire dragon. So, I improvised and grabbed all the consistent traits I found on his previous emblazonments. The rest I just had some fun with.

Voila!

It’s very stylized. Since when have heraldic depictions been known for their anatomical accuracy. :p
My absolute favorite by far is Jonathan Baker’s bear. In a combat situation, I would be just as afraid of getting caned by that bear as getting hit by my enemy’s sword.

Yeah, sort of. I got my supplies on the 13th, so this is the product of about a week’s time.
I think in the coming days I’ll scan the original sketches and let you all see how the ideas progressed.

I hope you like yours. I had a perfect sketch of yours with wings in full display, but then I read your posts from 2005, I believe, when you were first designing your crest. In one of the posts you mentioned how the cross-like appearance of the wings and swords was special to you, so I amended my fanciful sketch to what you see here.
Daniel,
These are great. Not a bad one in the bunch.
Rev. William Henry’s - Great work on the face
Kenneth Mansfield’s - I love his expression
Sandy Turnbull’s - Another great expression, and excellent proportions on the body
Dale Roe’s - He’s so cute. Thanks
Edward Ploysongsang’s - Great highlights
Philip Blanton’s - Don’t short yourself. The tail and mane are beautiful.
Jonathan Baker’s - I will agree with Kenneth. The bear is outstanding. This is your best of the lot.
Daniel - as I just said on the other forum… wow!!! This is incredible work. I am very impressed!
Very nice work! Thanks for sharing
