Artistically I agree with those readers who prefer the first version—the first rendition "sings" while the second…well, less so. I also prefer the first crest, which seems more comfortably anchored to the helm, but to each his own.
Adding the f-d-l between the two is a symbolic improvement, though I agree with those who would reverse the tinctures in the parting of the f-d-l to make it stand out better. Another option might be to leave out the f-d-l but add an orle of musical notes—changing the fight to a dance!
(or maybe changing the f-d-l to a billet—i.e. a dance card—tho’ that may be more than a little obscure for most viewers. Maybe a ball of yarn suspended from the chief?

Of course the original draft was graphically inspired by the Scottish laconism - the "Presbyterian heraldry" as Charles Burnett / Ross defines it. The style, in the course of work, was modified in one way and the armorial essence, quite separately, developed in another way. After all, my aim was, apart of doing what I believe to be decent heraldry, to please the client.
My initial intention regarding the fleur de lis was, of course, to make it Or and Arg. But this would give it unnecessary extra prominence, both visually and IMHO heraldically. I did not wish to provide it with a self-standing position. Whence the tinctures. Halves of the fleur are Arg and Or just because they "belong" to the respectively tinctured beasts - not to the Most Christian King and Our Lady.
A great solution, I will remember the idea if it should come up with one of my works. Your work is very well done.
