I mistakenly closed the Free Volborth thread. It’s taken.
A sad note : Carl-Alexander von Volborth has died 29 February 2009 (1919-2009)
Very sad indeed. May he Rest in peace.
As a small correction, he appears to have passed on February 25. The date didn’t look right (leap year) so I had to double check (sorry Ton).
damn. that sucks. i had no idea at all.

It is unfortunate to learn this. One of his two sons who still live in the Cincinnati area (Prof. von Volborth once taught at the University of Cincinnati) spoke with me by telephone a number of years ago. The son gave me his address in order to write to him but unfortunately I did not do this as I thought that could not possibly afford a commission from one of the world’s best known heraldic artists. We must remember that all oportunities are fleating and take them when they arise.
Dammit! I did not know that!!
I was actually corresponding with him for a while, and had an invitation to visit him at one point (which had to be revoked due to poor health on his part).
Sad news indeed, if new only to me.
We should put an obituary on our web page and in the next newsletter. Von Volborth was a giant in American heraldry and we should celebrate his contribution. Can members post what they know about him to assemble an appropriate tribute?
I think that’s an excellent idea Joe.
Ton, that’s a magnificent lozenge. Thanks for sharing.
Joe, is it out of bounds to use the lozenge that Ton posted on the obit you put on the web page? Or is that not kosher?

No, not out of bounds at all to use the hatchment, provided we have the permission of the artist or other copyright holder. I had thought the same thing.
