I have found this series of arms very interesting. Both in the design of the arms and the charges used. While some of the masonic lodges have chosen to include masonic symbols in their arms others have not, which makes me wonder if any guidance was given initially, or did each lodge have a free choice in their selection of charges?

Regards .................  Peter

Well as far as I know for the oldest Arms there excisted no specific Guidelines. But from information sent to me in 1997 by Tom C Bergroth at the time responsible for Heraldic Matters within the Swedish Order of Freemasons, the use of Masonic symbols are infact discouraged as regarding individual Arms. As the Information Material sent to those preparing for entering the VIII Grade - We are all Freemasons so there is no need to express this specificly. I guess that the thougth also is that the Arms could becom the basis of Family Arms and that descendats would not want to use Masonic symbols. If this is the case as regarding Lodge’s Arms I’am not sure.

The St John’s Lodge Tyrgils, Borgå. The two arms in Armour is from the Arms of Carelia and symbolises the namegiver Tyrgils Knutsson, founder of the City of Viborg which grew to become "Capital" of Carelia. An earlier Lodge of this name was during the Years 1938-40 and 1941-45 in the City of Viborg. When this City was lost to the Sovietunion at the end of World War II the Lodge ceased to excist. It’s hertitage was however keept alive by the Eastern Nyland Freemasons Club founded in 1988 in Borgå. In 2001 this Club was upgraded to a Lodge and took the name St John’s Lodge Tyrgils.

I’am shakeing life in to this old thread as I noticed that i have not mentioned the personal arms of Freemasons. I have already mentioned that upon entering the VIII degree Swedish Freemasons are obliged to assume Arms. These could take the form of old Family Arms or newly created ones. Use of Masonic symbols are nowadays disencouraged as not beeing distinctive enough, all beeing Freemasons in the context. The Shields are hung in the Lodge, and for preserving space they have a special eigth-cornered form (see below). Uppon beeing recived in the VIII degree, a Knigthly name is choosen in Swedish or Latin (redered as Ridd. [Riddaren] av/Eques a) this is displayed at the top of the Shields border (in base is the Motto). No external ornaments are to be shown, with some execption beeing Royal Masons (the King which before 1973 was the Grandmaster, displayed the Royal Crown on top of the Shield, and HKH Prince Bertil, Duke of Halland Grandmaster 1973-97 displayed a Ducal Crown) and those awarded the Kight and Commander with the Red Cross. The later used a special plumeted Helmet atop of the Shield and the Cross hanging from a ribbon below.

Example of Arms, here for Manager Ange Sandberg (Riddare av Byggstenen/Knigth of the Building Stone). Note the Roman numeral IV at the end of the name, notint that four previous members of the Family hade reached the VIII degree. The Arms was designed for the Family in 1980 by the late Dr Jan Raneke. Blasoned something like this per fess Or and Gules, in chief two Fleur-de-Lys Gules and in base three pallets couped Or.

Arms of a Knigth and Commander with the Red Cross, Ridd. av Byggandet (Knight of Building) Civil Engineer Åke Sandberg (1918-85).

If fore some reason the new "Knigth" dosen’t want to use a previous existing Arms, but still wants to add a memorial nod they can be shown in a Canton. Shown here for Tom C Bergroth chief of the Heraldry in the Swedish Order of Freemasons. He as chosen to display His Father’s Masonic Arms in the Canton. Note also the Roman numeral II denoting that Mr Bergroth is the second person in his Family reaching the VIII degree.

Another example, the Photographer Folke Rostén. His Knightly Name (Ridd. av Vidsynthet/Knight of Broadmindedness), the Arms with the Camera Lens and the Motto Var Objektiv = Be Objective, all alludes to his Profession.

All Pictures are form a Pamphlet called "Om Riddarevapen" sent to me some Years ago by Mr Bergroth.
