I really like the older USAAF/USAF wing and group insignias that look like they were designed by someone who had at least a passing acquaintance with heraldry.
For example:

The 90th Bombardment Group had nearly the same Arms in an Azure field a flying Pterodaktyl Or languaged Gules and eyed Vert. Motto Impavide = undautedly.
This Arms was approved on 22 September 1942. As I rember it the Pterodactyl here had a more fesswise position.

304th Bomb Group. The Field is Azure and the Bombs Or. The Motto translates as "The Eagle doesn’t capture Flies". Approved on 7 November 1942.

321nd Bomb Group. Arms approved on 7 November 1942 and on 30 August 1954 superseded by another design.
I found a picture of the Arms of the 90th Bomb Group. The possition of the Pterodactyl appears to be more erct with wings elevated or how the possition should be blasoned.

their older heraldry is great, i especially like the ‘semi-of-bombs’ field of the 304th Bomb Group.
