hi all. i have a commission, pro-bono, for a young man who just graduated high school and is going into the Navy. he was a big-time wrestler and swimmer and water polo guy in California. so, i am trying to think of ideas for a crest that alludes to both wrestling and swimming and i’m havin’ a heck of a time. any ideas?

p.s. this is a pro-bono commission—no money will be made on it, so i can’t offer you a kick-back on the crest if i like your idea and go with it only your name along with mine in the design section when we register them at USHR.

Sea-horses would be more allusive to water polo, I’d think.

An octopus, maybe?  It swims, and kind of wrestles.

Why not throw in a California angle: a sea-grizzly!

How about a mermaid?  (Or a mermad, since this is for a young mad, as you say.)

A whale and a giant squid combatant?

Not even a groan or a  for sea-horses?  How can you play water polo without them?

I am not sure about the wrestling, but, how about two outstretched arms, hands grasping/throwing a round ball - perhaps emerging from ‘waves of the sea’.

not a bad idea either Ian. in fact it is similar to what i had originally thought of.

the client has decided upon a crest. so, i will share it with everyone when i have finished the emblazon. smile

thanks again.

Too bad.  I was about to propose "A sumo wrestler, dripping, seated on a somewhat flattened water-polo ball, all proper".

Some of you have asked, so I will share the blazon with you. The blazon for the arms themselves is recorded at USHR and were done for the young man’s grandfather.

As for his crest, we chose something that looks like a swimmer’s arms coming out of the water (Navy, swimming and water polo) but can also look like two arms wrestling and which also alludes to the third hobby/sport/past time of the young man, which is chess.

The emblazon is still underway. smile

Achievement J. A. Trujillo

Arms: Or, five golps 2, 1, and 2, a border checky Purpure and Argent.

Crest: Out of waves of the sea two arms embowed and counter-crossed Proper, the hands grasping between them a chess queen Vert.

Mantling: Purpure, doubled Or.

thanks. a seahorse would be great—frankly that’s what i was leaning towards. but, he ranks wrestling as more important to him than water polo but not by much. so, we (his mom, himself and myself) worked out this crest.

p.s. i should’ve remembered the sage advice of one Fr. Selvester who once told me never design by committee (when i did it for my parish) and in this case three was too much. i loved the advice here, so not talkin of that…only the three involved at the point of attack. lol.
