You might also try dividing the bordure per pale.

Kevin’s ideas (roughly):

Kevin’s ideas have potential as well.  Again, changing the color scheme to green, black and white would make the different.  But even then, I still think that I like the other ones a little more.

Kenneth thanks for creating my "weird" one as well.  This one was so different for me because I kept thinking about what everyone was saying about trying to honor the past generations and designing for them.  And, since I don’t really have much of a connection to the spanish/mexican culture, past generations, and don’t really get along with my dad I was struggling to figure out where I fit in the bigger scheme of things.  So I was lying in bed thinking about the spanish designs (I really did read the spanish primer you sent) and saw they did a lot with trees and borders so I thought that might be a way I could allude to the spanish style.  I picked the oak tree because there are so many oaks where I grew up (I actually had no idea my surname has something to do with oaks).  I wanted to the tree to be standing in the middle of night and day because, to me, that showed that no matter how different you are from your family (even if you’re as opposite as night and day) you’re still one family.  You don’t have to agree with your past, but the past still helps shape the person you become.  Lastly, I wanted the sun and moon to have faces just because I remember always seeing artwork on the mexican version of bingo (Loteria) that had the sun and moon with faces on it.  It was another way of tying back to the spanish side.  I really like it because it’s so personal to me, but I don’t know if it’s what I want the arms to be.  I think it’s something I might just want to paint as an art piece instead.  I just can’t decide if I like it without the border or with the white border more.

Just throwing out an idea here, rough draft of course.

Gathering all the elements desired on the shield.

Three stars per fess in cheif

A Double arched Fess (the book or the CA. hills)

Passant Bear

I am showing different tincture ideas yet the third one stays within the three tinctures, were as, the top two would be four tinctures.

kkb-ia thanks for designing these.  I appreciate the effort.  They do indeed have everything that I was originally thinking about in my design but over the last week or so I’ve kinda scrapped those original ideas for my shield and moved them up the crest instead.  I definitely want to have a demi-bear in the crest so it’s not absolutely necessary that a bear is on the shield (but if we can make it work then i’ll take it).  The color scheme has changed to green, black and white because my entire family graduated high school with those colors and we went to three completely different high schools.  So I think it’s pretty unique that we all wore those colors.  The stars I do like but going back and forth between them and the oak branches.

I gotta say, seeing these on my computer screen is nice.  I think my favorite is still the one with the stars and no ermine (although I really do the line ermine as well).  It just seems to pop and be bold.  And I agree, using the bear and other ideas I originally had up on the crest would really stand out nicely.  This is most definitely a contender.  It has passed to the "Refrigerator Round"!

I didn’t like the acorns as much because for some reason the acorns just look a little silly to me.  I like the white branches but don’t love it which kinda makes me sad because I’m really starting to like the idea of the oak leaves as a cant.  That’s not something I had ever thought about before and now I really want to try and include that somehow.

I did some cutting and pasting of the various versions and put this together as just another subtly different option.  Not sure how I feel about it just yet.  Like it, but don’t necessarily love it.

I’m pretty fond of this one.  And I do tend to like one color one tincture, but given Jesses comments on night/day/oak canting/colors, etc.

What about:

per pale Blue Celeste and Sable between three Acorns slipped and leaved a Bear passant Argent (I think I messed that up, but it’s close).

I also think keeping the bear and acorns in gold is a bolder statement - but not Jesse’s color choice.

Anyway, I’m thinking, the bear is walking from night into day and the acorns retain the canting and representation of the children….

Of course the blue celeste could be azure (more of the darker sky in the AM?) but the whole thing is just a thought.

I’m also thinking it’s just about time for Jesse to take some examples for refidgerator testing and step away from this for a few weeks and see what’s "growing" on him.

I actually really love this one as well.  Back at the very beginning of this I probably would have said yes right away because it’s blue and gold and a bear.  It’s definitely "me".  Now I’m really leaning to the green, black, and white to try and tie in more of the family past.  Is there a way you can make it a white background with green branches and a black bear?  I know we’d be adding a 3rd tincture which would defeat the purpose of the 2 color scheme but I’d love to see how that looks.

I really like the latest version, also. However, what if the acorns were left <don’t hit me> proper?

Take care,

That is certainly an option (and potentially a nice one IMO), but I’d go ahead and make everything proper if you did that.

So: Argent an American black bear (Ursus americanus) between three acorns slipped and leaved all proper?

Just to keep the bear black…  Might actually be pretty nice, although I think I’ve become more partial to the blue and gold design from a few posts back.

Ursus americanus can be either black or brown which would be really confusing to have proper, but that’s irrelevant as I think this is supposed to be the now extinct California grizzly bear (Ursus californicus).

I am very fond of this most recent emblazonment by Mr. Mansfield.  Incidentally, I wasn’t aware California Grizzly was extinct. :(

For me it’s a close one between the following two.  I think you’d be happy in the long run with either of them, and your descendents will be as well.  That being said I think I still prefer the second of the two

I agree.  I think these two, along with the quartered with the oak branches are my top 3 choices right now.  I’m going to have the print them up and being the Refrigerator Round pretty soon.
