Then you can have Spanish nationality for two reasons: 1. a Spanish parent; 2. born in Spain.
Well… both my parents are American - but I’ve been told one year of residence in Spain would get me my citizenship back. (I had dual citizenship until I reached the age of 18.)
You’ve been told right. Spanish Constitution says that you can’t have Spanish original citizenship because you have not a Spanish parent, but Código Civil (an important law) says that who have been born in Spain can get citizenship with one year of residence.
So if you get in troubles in USA you can always come to Spain
