This looks really nice with less castellations on the fess.  I think using gules would look nice as well.  I think it’s just more of what you want to do with the crest.  Personally, I think the rat up there would be better since that seems to be more about what you relate with.

I would love to see a mockup of both shields with their respective crests.

Jesse - I’ll have ‘em in the morning. I think seeing both designs side-by-side will help a lot. I’m still really pleased with having thought of the Technic element. I derive so much joy from building things and it was Lego that started that fire burning in me.

I’m pretty sure that Joseph will think this is a bit of a stretch and I respect his opinion a lot, so that will disappoint me. However, I think this device is just really neat looking. Now, do I make the fess gules or would that be too much? If I did go with gules than a red pegasus for a crest would follow nicely. Right now, using vert, it would be easy to go with a rat.

Why would I think it’s a stretch?  I think it’s excellent.  Artistically I would make the compass roses a little bigger to fill more of the field, but otherwise I think it’s a very good design.  Getting exactly the emblazonment you want every time may require more detailed blazoning than I usually care for, but I always think blazoning is secondary to the graphic appearance of the arms.

Up to you as to green or red fess, but I would make the crest the same color as the fess in any case—otherwise the arms will look like a traffic light.  I think your rat holding a sword badge would be very good as a crest.

I’d avoid the Pegasus—too SCA-ish for my taste.

Quit while you’re ahead, forego the fridge test, and pick these before you go and screw them up. wink Make your crest a green rat holding or doing whatever you’d like.

Kenneth - screwing ‘em up is what I’m good at!

A demi-rat on a helmet will look ridiculous.  The scale is wrong.  I think a green rat sejant erect brandishing a gold sword would be interesting—your badge in a slightly different posture.

Joseph - just saw your post. I’ll start work on a sejant erect rat. I think sable will tie in better with the compass roses.

This latest design is definitely the best one proposed on this topic.  One I think you’ll be happy with for years to come.

I definitely think the rat with the sword is the way to go for your crest.  He looks great up there (although a little small).  I think that’s the right way to go.

Usually you want the crest to be of similar size to the helm itself.

The rat should be about the same size in relation to the helmet as the groundhog in my crest ... give or take.

Just for grins and giggles, here is my little (flying) pony. Thanks for the clarification on size, Kenneth.

I don’t see anything wrong with the winged horse as a crest (I wouldn’t put anything in its mouth), but it seems a shame to abandon the wee rodent if you really and truly identify with him so much. I do agree with Joe, though, that you should make the fess red if you go with the red Pegasus crest.

Oh yeah, that goes without saying. If I were to use the pegasus, then the fess needs to be gules. The point of using gules is because it represents Dallas. Green simply wouldn’t do at that point.

Though I think you should keep your shield as is, I agree with Kenneth that it seems a shame at this point to abandon your little rat friend wink
