Ditto Jesse and Fred. It is certainly original in appearance. If you’re in need of a quadrupedal animal, why not a bobcat which was native to American and Western PA. or a White Tailed Dear which is the state animal? He could have antlers Or and just that smidge of white with the raised tail - the rest as above? or the state dog, which is a Great Dane?

Combining those two ideas, I think something like this is attractive:

I can’t think of how a bird could wear a tabard, but I like that idea too. I’d just have to think of a quadrupedal animal with some personal significance.
This is, to my mind simply stunning. If this were ever to come across my desk I would take a real joy in painting it !
Please please do not add a tabard to the bird it would look completely out of place and make no sense. Less is more and this design is good heraldry!

Do I perceive backpeddling or teasing?
Another enthusiastic vote for this last design!
Add mine to the chorus of voices extolling the virtues of this crest design. It compliments your arms nicely. Now, if only coming up with a new design for my own crest were as easy…

Ditto—very striking! While I think a tabard-wearing beastie would be nice, your eagle semee is even nicer!
Thanks for everyone’s enthusiastic responses! I’m liking the eagle a lot too. (It has some personal significance too, so I like it on a few levels, not just the aesthetic.) I can’t think of anything I would change if I go this route; but give it a few weeks…
I want everyone to know that after a few months of pondering this, I have decided to go with this design. The only thing I’m changing is I’m shelving the motto for now until I find a phrase that resonates with me more.
Thanks for everyone’s help in what I think was a highly successful collective brainstorming.
“Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.” Well done Alexander! :D
Well done.
Congratulations! It is a wonderful design.
A very nice outcome. Congratulations.
I really mean it this time when I say, I think you have a winner here Alexander. Glad you are keeping it.
Dittos all around—very nice, nicely distinctive.
