You probably shouldn’t call it a mixing board because it isn’t one. It’s five pallets and five billets (fesswise). While I agree with you that the default position of a billet is palewise, if properly described in the blazon there is nothing to prevent it from being fesswise.

How about a dragon playing just one instrument on a field semy of pansies?

That’s another option, too.

I emailed and spoke with him briefly yesterday and he is set on the original design. He feels comfortable and is proud of the design. He exact words are, "it feels right." One thing he did mention was that the "mixer" idea was fantastic and he really liked it, but it wasn’t him.

Perhaps his motto should now read ‘Vos can plumbum a equus ut unda tamen vos non planto imbibo’. (Or something like that :D) And I’m sure if Daniel or one of our other Latin experts sees this I’m about to have my wrists slapped.

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him imbibe…

I got the first part but I guess I don’t know English idioms that well either.

"You can lead a horse to water but don’t drink from downstream"?

The original design is clearly too busy, and the mixing board is clearly a much better (indeed, inspired) option, for everyone involved ... except for the one person with the casting vote.  It happens ... maybe it wouldn’t be so surprising if he was a newly consecrated bishop smile

Not that we (i.e. Snyder) should stop trying to find a simpler design acceptable to the DJ; but not at the cost of killing his enthusiasm for the whole notion of adopting arms.  After all, we’re helpers/facilitators/hopefully teachers in this process, not the Wappen SS.*

(*Sorry if that’s over the top—I’ve just been looking for some flimsy excuse to use that line instead of Heraldry Police…)

A variation of one suggestion option, "semee of pansies" might IMO better be an orle of pansies—just as visibly pansies but less visual clutter under & immediately around the one-dragon-band.

Maybe the dragon should have a harmonica, too?

If the armiger is set on the design then so be it, but don’t let him get away without fridge testing.

I told him that he had to test them, for the very least, a month. It has been explained that there is no rush and I want him to be happy with no, "I love it, but…" comments. That part he understands at least smile

smile—and don’t forget the squeeze-box (small accordian) under one arm & the foot-operated cymbal…  I can picture the poor beastie fitting right in with the rest of the street musicians at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf…

Oh, heck with it—let’s go Billy Joel and stick to sitting at a piano with a harmonica.. LOL
