Has anyone ever done or seen a newer emblazonment of the arms of Robert Burns?

I am sure most of us have seen the one that has been passed around the net but I dont think I have seen a new rendering.

I have not seen one. There is a very detailed photo of the 1859 centenary medallion here, though. To the best of my knowledge the charges are all proper.

This is the only color rendering I have ever seen.

Which is wrong because the field is supposed to be blue. Even on the website where that image came from the fellow (who calls himself somewhat of a herald) says it is "Azure".

The sallet helm used in this emblazonment dates, as far as I know, only to the 1950s or 60s, and is employed by Lord Lyon only for grants to corporate bodies.  What reason do we have to believe that Robert Burns had arms?  Is the inescutcheon in the arms matriculated to James Burnes in 1851 (Or a holly bush surmounted by a crook and a hunting horn saltire-ways proper) supposed to reflect a connection with the poet?

From the Robert Burns Country website:

Quote:

In May, he was a little more hopeful, writing to thank [George] Thomson for the present of a new seal made on a ‘Highland Pebble’. And incorporating his own unregistered Arms design:

‘On a field, azure, a holly-bush, seeded, proper, in base; a Shepherd’s pipe and crook, Saltier-wise, also proper, in chief. On a wreath of the colors a woodlark perching on a sprig of bay-tree, proper. For Crest. Two mottoes: Round the top of the Crest ‘Wood-notes wild’. At the bottom of the shield, in the usual place. ‘Better a wee bush than nae bield’.’

I have read elsewhere that he designed his own coat of arms but died before he could have them matriculated with Lyon Court.

Apparently the version with the (differenced) argent field and the sallet is the coat of arms of the Robert Burns World Federation (granted I think by Lord Lyon).

Here is the whole of his quote, from a letter to a Mr. Cunningham on March 3, 1793.

Quote:

There is one commission that I must trouble you with. I lately lost a valuable seal, a present from a departed friend which vexes me much. I have gotten one of your Highland pebbles, which I fancy would make a very decent one, and I want to cut my armorial bearing on it: will you be so obliging as inquire what will be the expense of such a business? I do not know that my name is matriculated, as the heralds call it, at all, but I have invented arms for myself; so you know, I shall be chief of the name, and, by courtesy of Scotland, will likewise be entitled to supporters. These, however, I do not intend having on my seal. I am a bit of a herald, and shall give you, secundum artem, my arms. On a field, azure, a holly bush, seeded, proper, in base; a shepherd’s pipe and crook, saltier-wise, also proper, in chief. On a wreath of the colours, a woodlark perching on a sprig of bay tree, proper, for crest. Two mottoes: round the top of the crest, Wood-notes wild; at the bottom of the shield, in the usual place, Better a wee bush than nae bield. By the shepherd’s pipe and crook I do not mean the nonsense of painters of Arcadia, but a stock and horn and a club, such as you see at the head of Allan Ramsay, in Allan’s quarto edition of the Gentle Shepherd.

Not only did he not matriculate his arms, but he knew that he should and seemed to expect to receive supporters in the process.

Adjusting for inflation, the sum is equivalent to:

1913 (the closest to 1907): $116 million

1984: $11.0 million

You mean because no metal is specified? Unless Burns had uniformed servants, I think the question is moot. But if pressed, I’d say blue. If pressed for two colors I’d say blue and white ... or gold ... or buff. wink

Except, as Joe mentioned, the sallet helm is reserved for corporate bodies, like the Robert Burns World Federation - whose arms appear earlier in this thread. Burns the man should have a tilting helm or great helm.
