Let’s see how this will do? The refrigerator test. Any thoughts?
Too busy. Lose the chief and the stag’s head, or lose the <strike>bordure</strike> (oops!) orle and the chevronels.
Same here.
The stag’s head on top of the chevronels, which are then interlaced with the bordure, which is in turn interrupted by the chief, give the whole thing a dizzying and complex three-dimensionality. I feel "heraldried at."
There are some powerful elements here, but not together.
Going back to Joe’s suggestion from a previous thread and replacing the mountains he suggested with the braced chevronnels which you seem to like….
I agree. It does all seem a little busy. To me, the stag’s head looks as if it was tacked on at the last minute. I don’t mind the chief and think that with the interlaced chevrons and border might look nice. But I would move the stag’s head up to the crest to open up the shield a little bit.

This is very nice!

Or he could use Joe’s/Ken’s idea and move the castle to the crest.

I agree! VERY nice, indeed. The stag would also look nice in "Gules" or "Vert."

This does look nice. And for holidays perhaps a version nosed gules?

It would but then you would lose the cant with his last name.

That is wicked slick!
EDIT: I’d like to add the suggestion that the with the last name BLACKard, I would opt for no colors other than the black and white. I realize the sable stag is an adequate canting of Blackard (black hart), but I think if you change the chevronnels to black, it would further emphasize the shield is directly connected to the name. With a name like Blackard… I would want a BLACK shield.
Granted, I would fear possibly duplicating existing arms, but I think it would be worth finding out if Per fess (or per pale) Argent and Sable, a stag counterchanged is available. I would bet the per pale division is more likely to already exist. You could play with the stag to ensure uniqueness.
Per fess Argent and Sable a demi-stag counterchanged
... a stag passant guardant ...
... stag’s antlers ...
Per fess Argent and Sable, three demi-stags counterchanged - perhaps with a crest, issuing from a tower/castle/rook argent a demi-stag sable
Maybe crown the stags?
Per fess Sable and Argent, in chief a stag statant to dexter, in base a stag statant to sinister counterchanged.
Just some thoughts.

Ahhhhhh .... good point. I didn’t even look at the OP’s name.
I suppose a "heart sable fimbriated argent" within the "black hart" would be overkill?
(^__^)

Maybe the intended effect isn’t the same but, how about a repositioning of the chevronels to chevronny?

I quite like that last one.
Ditto Ken—message #14 is simple & elegant! (also nicely drawn—not necessary for refrigerator test but a nice extra).
The ony question—the only really important question—is whether it will appeal to, or "grow on" Mr. Blackhard as much as to the rest of us!
