A heartening heraldic story at http://www.pjphs.org/page.cfm?p=421: how six Catholic high schools with arms as bad as this:

merged into one new high school with arms as good as this:

If a member nominates it for the Pierre de Chaignon Design Award by the end of today.  I’ve already used up my self-imposed limit on my nominations.

Well, too late for this year but can I nominate it for next year?

(IMO the "M" could be depicted either more simply or perhaps as a scarf or stole bent into an M; but since the award is for design rather than execution, not relevant for our purposes.)

That would make the reference to Pope John Paul II’s arms less obvious.

Well, I’d say "more subtle"as well as IMO better heraldry…

better heraldry without the M ? I disagree because the M of JP II has been used in a lot of arms and as such it has become a standard reference to this pope. That makes the M a special charge whch is outside the good or bad heraldry discussion.

Different strokes for different folks…

I agree that the alphabetical M is a more direct reference; but (as above) IMO something a bit more subtle is preferable—recognizing that others may see it differently.  After all, if everybody here always agree on everything, how much fun would tht be?  smile
