I have been trying to come up with a two sketches to make the profile and frontal view of my crest so that I can carve the master for a flag pole finial. For the life of me I cant seem to figure out a good way to deal with the lochaber axe so that it would not be so apt to be broken. So I put it to my friends here. Does anyone have an idea of how to accomplish this so that I can make a good sturdy crest that can be made into a finial.
Here is the blazon again.
CREST: [On a wreath of Or and Sable] Upon a grassy mound a bear statant erect supporting a Lochaber axe with his forepaws, his right hind foot resting upon a boulder all proper.
create the blade of the lochaber axe separately and then drill holes and mate the blade to the rest of the finial with thick wire connecting them?
Could you shorten the haft of the axe so that the bottom of the blade meets the upper edge of the bear’s head?
And you could use a metal rod for the haft; then, drill holes through the bear’s fists to allow passage thereof.

Fantastic ideas by all but Joseph I think you are on a track I haven’t thought of before. Can you elaborate a little more?
Something along those lines. Still trying to figure out the boulder and paw placement though.
All good suggestions and I have nothing to offer further, but I’ll give you some inspiration.
