New Arms of the RC Diocese of New Ulm

It appears that the Roman Catholic Diocese of New Ulm has changed its Arms into this heraldic mess:

The former Arms was also rather complicated:

Or gouettee de poix, on a bend wavy sable between in chief a fret of three salmon proper and in base an enscutcheon per fess sable and argent, a snake descendant wavy argent.

The old arms actually looked better than they sound but were objectionable to the Indian tribes indigenous to the area, and for understandable reasons (something I rarely concede in such cases).  See http://www.dnu.org/news/newspaper/jan03/

 

I can think of a number of better solutions than this, however.

Yes if they where at it they surely could have come up with something better than this. The Ulm Shield even looks like Argent a Chief Sable and not per fess Sable and Argent. Loosing the connection with the name.
