As for the silly dress dust-up, I suspect (without really giving a rat’s derrière) that it’s as much about differing monitors with different color settings, as anything else.  I can walk into Costco and see dozens of different TVs, all set to the same game, and scarcely any two with the same shades of jersey colors.  Apparently the electronics industries of the world allow their products the same artistic license that we allow to heraldic artists.

(But even so, I can still easily distinguish UNC from Navy, or UCLA from Cal, on each & every screen… )
