How exactly does one come up with a badge?  I’ve seen them usually incorporate either a charge or crest, but I’m not exactly sure how to go about it.

I assume you are trying to design a badge for yourself. Let me suggest, an Eagle sable, as in you arms, holding in one talon, the cross or as in your arms, and in the other a fleur de lis (is that a fleur de lis, or something similar?) or.

what do you think?

but if your question is a general one, badges are usually thought up from the entire achievment, as crests are thought up from the shield. Hope that helps. smile

Thanks Mohamed!  I thought that was the case, but I wasn’t sure if the badge was more a representation of the crest or the charges.  I like your idea as well.  Now to find the artist to create it!:)

Hmm, I can whip something up using the Free Heraldic Clipart site and MS Paint, but I warn you, I am nooo Daniel De Bruin!

But you can always use it as a basic idea to show a real artist, like Donnchadh for example!

Now to get to work!

Andrew,

What about something like this:

It incorporates both crosses and the f-d-l.

Take care,

Your badge, sir. smile

What do ya think? It is just a rough idea, you can show it to someone to draw it up well.

I had trouble with the talons, I couldn’t figure out how to have it hold the items. And also, your eagle is pure sable, right? Or is it armed, langued a different color? If you want I can fix that for you.

Well, hope you like it.

Regards,

Very nice renditions both!  You guys make short work of visualizations!:D

And you’re correct, the blazon is "an Eagle displayed, Sable".  I didn’t bother with having it langued gules, in my minds’ eye I thought the small strip of red would be lost on the Or anyway.

Andrew,

For some reason I had two f-d-l’s and one cross on my original pic. That has since been corrected to two crosses and one f-d-l. Sorry about that.

You are absolutely correct. A badge does not have to reflect the arms, but I think it is nice when they do. In fact, if I can remember correctly, there is somewhat of an English tradition for armigers desiring a badge to have a specific "knot". If I were to have a knot badge, I’d probably go with a bowline with a square knot on the bottom connecting the bitter and standing ends.  That’s just me, though.  YMMV.

Take care,

well Philip, the badge doesn’t have to match the arms exactly. I personally liked the one with two fleur de lis and one cross centrally.smile

I worked up my badge with TR.  It incorporates elements of my shield, but it doesn’t have to.  We simply took the two charges from my shield.  We started with the first charge (sun in its splendor), parted it per bend sinister, and then surmounted it with the second charge (escarbuncle).  Simple, and yet, unique!

Holly is the traditional plant badge of Clan MacMillan.  The leaves shown are specifically American holly.

Quite an attractive badge. Excellent design. How long did it take you to reach the final version of the design?
