I wouldn’t consider it a waste of money, as I really look at it as another rendition of my arms by another artist.  As for being famous, only in my dreams!  They don’t make movies about IT guys (other than Office Space, that is).:D

Use the bookplates!  They look gorgeous!  Besides, there is nothing wrong with someone finding out who it is that keeps their books immaculate.  Do you ever loan books out to people?  At least they can’t say they forgot who it belonged to (unless you write your name in the front in pencil, which I highly doubt).  Use the bookplates!
