Hey everyone!

I haven’t posted in ages! So here is something interesting I found. April 1 is the day that the two Captains Regents (or is it Captains Regent?) of San Marino are "instated". I found it interesting due to; 1) My interest in small countries, 2) insignia, and 3) the arms of San Marino on the very interesting, and in my opinion, fitting, "dual throne". Can anyone try their hand at translating the Latin on the top of the seat?

The regular arms for comparison:

Notice the arms on the throne do not include the famous crown (a symbol of sovereignity, rather than monarchy per se).

Cheers,

Ugh!  First image didn’t come through for me.  Can you retry?

I find San Marino’s political system very interesting, since it is as close to the old Roman political system as anyplace left on Earth.

Incidentally, I think it is Captains Regent.

I have no idea where the illustration of the dual throne is. Maybe you forgot to post the link?

The late father of a friend of mine was once a Captain Regent of the Most Serene Republic of San Marino. He established the republic’s renowned business in numismatics and philately as well as stopped the granting of new noble titles. San Marino was once not that unusual in its political form, the Most Serene Republic of Venice (Doge), the Republic of Ragusa (Duke & Grand Council), the Republic of Genoa (Doge) are but a few examples of republics with titled nobles and elected rulers.

Dang it!

It showed up in the preview. OK, when I get home I will save the image and upload it to photobucket, and then post it. I got it off of some political blog. I hate it when this happens and the images don’t show up…..

Don’t worry, I will take care of the prob, and show you all that interesting dual throne!

Very interesting, but that is not the one in the picture I have. That one you posted looks like it might be in their Parliament?

OK, if you check now, the pic should be in the first post:

I strongly suspect from the furniture styles of the two thrones, that the throne in the photograph you posted is in the Renaissance style Palazzo Pubblico, the administrative seat of the Captains Regent and the throne in the photograph that I posted is in the Neoclassical style Basilica del Santo completed in 1855, where the Captains Regent are installed. These two buildings are separated from one another by a narrow street.

The motto should read

"Animus in consulendo liber"

=

" a free mind in council"

"Animus liber" = "a free heart/soul/spirit/mind"

"in consulendo" = "when counseling/debating"

Though I am straying away from the topic of San Marino with this post, the flag and arms posted below are from a now defunct Italian aristocratic republic similar in governmental form to San Marino:

The State Flag of the Most Serene Republic of Genoa, in use from 1637 until 1797.

Very nice, thanks for sharing. Really love the arms of Genoa. As to the emblem above the crown, that head of Janus (correct me if I’m wrong as my recollection of ancient mythology isn’t too swell:)), is that some sort of crest?

I am very interested in items appearing above or part of coronets, ever since I realized the emblem in the coronet of the arms of various members of the famous Rothschild (spelling?) banking family, which was IIRC, Britannia in some sort of chariot??

Regards,

And of course the City of San Marino here in Southern California,  Their website <http://www.ci.san-marino.ca.us> has the arm-inspired city seal way down on the right.
