As some of you know, I am working with my family on a design that all will embrace, and if anyone has done this, you will know how hard it is. The shield is almost there. I would like some ideas for a crest that represents farming in Pontiac, MI. My mother’s ancestors owned hundreds of acres that became part of Pontiac (where the money went, I have no idea).
Pontiac is in Oakland County. How about something with an oak tree?
Quote:
Named for the numerous oak openings in the county. Bela Hubbard described an oak opening as "a majestic orchard of oaks and hickories varied by small prairies, grassy lawns and clear lakes."
Or…
Michigan has a Centennial Farm program to recognize family farms which have been in existence for more than 100 years. The markers have a wolverine on them. That would make a nice crest.

Did you look under the mattress?
What kind of crops did your family farm? That might provide an image. Were there any special features on this land, such as a rock or hill or river? Perhaps something of the native flora or fauna for the area?
As said above, a wolverine might be good.

Wheat, cattle, and sheep and operated a mill. Oak trees were plentiful. The township was Waterford. Their last name was Osmun, though I am drawing a blank on how to cant OSMUN.
List of official Michigan things:

Now I understand the wolverine connection. Millstone might be a possibility.
what are the elements of the escutcheon? for purpose of uniformity.

Tentatively, Azure a swan naiant Argent a chief indented embowed throughout of five points upwards Or.

I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks.
I like this idea from Xander. The oak stump for the clearing of the land for the agricultural enterprise—both for the abundance of oak trees and the location in Oakland County—and the wolverine for the greater location of Michigan (plus a great animal for emblazoning).
im thinking to compliment the swan, argent would best be for the stump. the chain Or, and to defend the rule of tinctures, perhaps under the stump a mound vert to attach the chain to.
im on vacation, all i have is paint to work with
In my insane brainstorm moments, for an Osmun cant, I thought of OZ symbols: yellow bricks, winged monkey, scarecrow. For a Pontiac farm allusion, maybe an arrow palewise (or other weapon) cortised (as opposed to cotised?) by two demi-garbs (hmm…where did I hear that?). Other crops, carrots, beets, cucumbers, etc? This will take some time.
Maybe a wolverine atop a food pyramid on a yellow brick foundation.
By the time we’re done, someone is bound to suggest a Bonneville or a Grand Prix…
Since the name is historically derived from Chief Pontiac, why no visual nod in his direction?
or he could simply adopt the pontiac logo
Thought of a cant for Osmun, but I don’t see it as much use for a crest.
"Os" is Latin for "mouth," and "Mund" is German for "mouth." Perhaps something like the Rolling Stones logo?
Sorry.
