For color balance, I like Kenneth’s suggestion to try the chevron Sable and the mullet Gules.
The problem to me is if you have two animals, and they aren’t addorsed, the shield tends to look lop-sided. So far the one in post #13 is the most solid. I wouldn’t say it’s there yet, but it’s the best so far. Keep playing around with it.

I couldn’t disagree more. Animals facing the dexter is the norm because shields are most often worn on one’s left arm and that way they are facing forward. Ready to engage in battle or in life.

I think this is my favourite thus far.
Off-topic: is anyone taking bets on what will be in Joe McMillan’s 5,000th post?

Oh my! It really should be something good, shouldn’t it?

Always nice to met a fellow Buckeye! Born and raised in Cincinnati myself.
I was born and raised in Columbus, but live in Burlington, Ky now…due south of Cincy, though I spend most of my time in Norwood with my girlfriend.
I really like the chevron Sable, not sure exactly why I never considered it. As a birthday present a friend of mine is drawing me up some official cardinals that are more fitting than the ones I’ve been using, so this weekend I will most likely be playing with options.

Nice color balance, although I still like the birds addorsed.

Tincture violation (sort of). Black on top of red. And unlike the "facing to dexter" thing, it’s an actual rule

Actually, this is not a technical violation of the tincture rule as generally understood in English-influenced heraldic domains. This is technically a color ordinary on a field parted per chevron of a color and a metal, which is deemed to be acceptable.
But it should be a violation, because it looks awful (in my opinion, of course).
The rule on dexter facing beasts and birds is that they face to dexter unless otherwise specified. Usually one is expected to have a good reason for placing them other than to dexter. But of course this doesn’t apply to animals placed combatant, respectant, addorsed, etc., where one of them by definition faces to sinister. My objection to the cardinals "addorsed" (not really a good term in this case, since it means "back to back" and these would really be tail to tail) was esthetic, not legalistic.
I tend to this one

and I would prefer the Cardinals to be addorsed, I think it would suit the chevron better, more on guard so to speak.

Whatever your point of view is, it still looks lop-sided to me.
That being said this is the best design presented yet, I really like it actually.

Now that is what I’m talking about! Looks suited for a guy from Cincy (or thereabouts). I would try the refrigerator test for a month with all the different designs and see which one you like best.
Spend time in Norwood eh? Use to live in Clifton and North Avondale. Spent a lot of time in Norwood too! How is the place doing? I remember it in its heyday when the GM plant was still open. Use to eat at Dockside Six once a week. Sad how things change. Hope things have gotten better.
Born in Dayton, parents from KY—cardinals are nice!
But then so are dogwood flowers…

Another Buckeye native who ends up in California! Except in my case I kept heading west until I hit the Far East.
Dayton? I remember the old Wright Force Museum. They had a fairly descent (albeit small) display of Army Air Corp/USAF heraldry and insignia on display if I recall correctly.
