Some of you already know that I have been making wooden plaques with shields for peoples’ heraldic arms. I am obviously a novice at this stuff and have a long way to go but I learn a little bit more with each one I finish.

Nice work. I especially like the Larson one.

They are all very nice. I especialy like the shield backgrounds in the ones for the various Garrisons.
These are really very nice Jeff. I’d appreciate knowing when you can accept commissions. :D
Nice work, Jeff.
These are awesome Jeff! It’s nice to finally see the Larson one after the design process. It looks great.
Thank you very much Dale, Chris, David and Jesse, your positive responses are very encouraging!
And Richard, that is the highest compliment I could receive, recommending I do commissions.
I am definitely inspired to do more of these now, thankyou!
In an unrelated note, it occurs to me just now that you can’t spell Dalek without Dale (a great mystery solved).
You can really see the improvement. I like what you’re doing quite a lot and would love to have one of those hanging on my wall.
Really nice!—So…since the others are too polite to ask—how much?
Thanks Josh!
Michael, do you think $15 for small 5x7" and $30 for larger 7x9" would be reasonable given materials cost of wood, varnish sandpaper and paint? I really don’t have any experience with selling art. I guess I would have to weigh them and see what shipping costs in US and international will be and whether flat rate boxes will be economical.

This sounds a little light and maybe not taking into account your time. Specialized personal items such as this should command a bit more. And, I’d start with a quote which was "plus S&H" because of international concerns.

Allowing yourself some pricing "wiggle room" for especially complex designs won’t be a bad idea either.
New artists tend to undercharge how much it costs for their work. I myself was guilty of it until I started to realize how much time alone I invest in a piece. The problem with charging so low is that it hurts the other artists who are actually trying to feed their families with their skills. Art really takes skill so don’t sell yourself short.
Hey y’all—hush! Let him raise his prices AFTER he does mine…
(oh heck—he’s probably reading this,,,darn,,,)
I’d recommend at least double those prices, Jeff. Sorry, Michael.
Another data point would be to take a look at the bucket shops that offer similar items and realize that their offerings are mass produced using clip art. Surely your handmade art should cost more.
