Slow morning @ work and started going through clipart collection and with the use of Ms paint and Powerpoint I started trying to create members crests just to get a "feel" for recoloring and combining http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/1869/memberscrests.jpg

I know that some may not be totally accurate just used them as a ‘template" for practice.

I’m happy that you liked it, you have a great and unique crest I actually had to go online to find a celestial globe clipart that even looked good!

Very cool…thanks for picking mine to play with! Feel free to use the full emblazonment to practice if you would like.

p.s. - That goes for everyone practicing their artistic skills.

Could you elaborate on your process a bit more?  It’s interesting to know how other create their emblazonments.  For instance, my personal process includes creating the drawings in a CADD program called Microstation V8i and embellishing it in Illustrator/Inkscape or Photoshop/GIMP.

I second that for everyone else as well and have plans of doing the same in the future.

Well Since I have Armorial Gold clipart which is in .wmf (‘Windows Metafile) and I was @ work and didn’t have access to Gimp or Inkscape like I have @ home,  I opened files in Microsoft office picture manager and exported files to .bmp (bitmap) then I could change colors using ms paint. (if you save as .jpg then you get a lot of individual pixels around the edges that you have to recolor…..very time consuming). Then I used powerpoint as the canvas. You can’t really crop images but you can give images a colored back ground and then make it transparent if you have to overlay images.

Looking online @  Microstation V8i ......MIKEY LIKES IT!

I use it because it’s what I know (I am a civil designer by trade) unfortunately, it’s not cheap.  Neither are most of the professional alternatives (AutoCAD, IntelliCAD, Revit).  You might look into Free CAD or DraftSight for free alternatives.  Then again, you might be able to get a hold of a student version of AutoCAD or Microstation if you are interested in going that route.

I like using CADD software because I feel like I have more control over the precision of vectors than I can get with Illustrator or Inkscape.  If I want curves that are actually tangent to a line I can get those as opposed to bezier curves and freehand lines.  Plus if I want to specify a length or radius I can generally do so.  The only drawback is that the added precision can be more time consuming.  There are trade-offs.

FYI, I just checked out DraftSight a bit and it seems to be a very legitimate piece of drafting software.  If you have any experience with AutoCAD the interface and commands will seem very familiar to you.  It has the ability to open DWG, DXF and DWT files and appears to have the ability to export to PDF, EMF, SVG among other formats.  I might have to start doing some things with this myself just to brush up on my AutoCAD abilities.
