Bolton says:
Quote:

"[Sa] a stag trippant within a bordure indented, a chief indented [or].  Impaling:  Erm on a canton gu a cross crosslet [or] (Lello of Herts?)

Gov. Edward Hopkins of Conn. used a seal of Hamblen impaling Lello (?).  Heral. Jour., vol. 3, p. 175.  Dr. H. M. Buck’s attribution.  Frame for "Hopkins" coat made 1678 by Nicholas Desborough (Love’s Harford, p. 303).

The reference to Heraldic Journal is to an article describing the seals on correspondence addressed to Gov. John Winthrop of Massachusetts, in the collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society.  It ascribes the seal to Hopkins, but the Hamblen and Lello attributions seem to be Bolton’s.  The Journal article does not give tinctures.

Is the doo-hickey on top of the horsehead in the crest an heraldic entity or simply a decorated piece of the bridle? It seems to show up in the seal of the crest as well.
