Actually that isn’t as ridiculous as it might sound.  There are many examples of a charge being "wounded" and shown having a paint-ball looking blood smudge on some prominent part of their bodies… Perhaps a shield could be supported by a "horse mortally wounded" and have the blood over his heart.
