Today I received the following e-mail from Saguenay Herald of the
Canadian Heraldic Authority:
"I am delighted to announce that yesterday Dr. Claire Boudreau was
appointed Chief Herald of Canada, with the effective date of June 26,
2007, to succeed Robert D. Watt, who is retiring after having served
as the first Chief Herald of Canada for the past 19 years. I shall
send more details later, but I was eager to share with you this
excellent news."

Many well-deserved congratulations to our new Chief Herald!
(Note- this is the only time you’ll ever catch me humming "Hail to the Chief"!)
Beautifully simple arms. Congratulations to Dr Boudreau. Is there going to be another appointment as Deputy Chief Herald, or was that created specifically to ease the transition from one Chief Herald to another?

I suspect there won’t be another Deputy for a while, but I’m a long way from Ottawa….
I think Canada King of Arms would be much nicer….

You should have spoken up twenty years ago.
The title of "King of Arms" wouldn’t have flown with the politicians who approved the creation of the Canadian Heraldic Authority- too many of them hate the idea that we are a monarchy, and would have fought against the CHA had it been too big a reminder of the existence of Her Majesty.
(Besides, wouldn’t that make Claire the Queen of Arms? Doesn’t sound right…)
I actually think a woman appointed as king of arms should be styled exactly that, just as the Queen is the Duke of Lancaster.

that’s ok darren, as i dont think we’d expect a canadian to be singing this song anyway ... anymore than i would sing ‘O Canada’.

Or that a female naval first-year cadet is a Midshipman: it’s a job title, not a gender description.

Ditto the office of the Speaker of the House of Lords, currently held by a woman (Baroness Hayman), who is addressed as "Lord Speaker".
Why not use the same title as the ‘king of arms’ in the court of Emperor Napoleon I? "Chief Herald of Arms"
Which brings an important question to mind…if Hillary becomes President, is Bill the First Gentleman? :D
Cheers,

It is an important question which, sooner or later, will have to be answered, Clinton or not. The answer is YES!
