Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski will be ordained today as Auxiliary bishop of Rockville Centre, NY. His arms reflect the national colors of Poland, the USA, and the colors of the Vatican City-State and the diocese. The saltire alludes to St. Andrew, the fleur de lis to Mary and the counter changed crosses to the diocesan patroness, St. Agnes, virgin & martyr. The motto is taken from the Angelus and means "Let it be done to me according to your word".
I think its a good design and a pleasant overall effect.
That’s nice. Do I also detect an allusion to the arms of the archdiocese of New York, or is the resemblance coincidental?
I believe that’s a coincidence. The new bishop’s diocese is in the Metropolitan province of NY but he has no connections to the archdiocese of NY. The detailed explanation of the coat of arms mentions no such connection and there is no reason heraldically to make such a connection. The saltire and the tinctures (argent and gules) in the arms of the archdiocese are an allusion to St. Patrick whereas in Bishop Zglejszewski’s arms they are an allusion to the national colors of Poland and St. Andrew. So, it seems coincidental.
Interesting design. Curious as to the relevant diocesan arms & how well they might go together impaled.
Well, since he’s an auxiliary bishop, he won’t be impaling his arms, but the question would be relevant if he is promoted to be the bishop of a diocese. That, however, is known only to God.
Quite nice arms. But I’am glad that I don’t have to pronounce the Bishops’ last name! Truly a Tounge twister.
