Dear All,

A current event that was noted on the HSS forum. Mark Dennis has been appointed Ormond Pursuivant with effect from next week.

http://www.lyon-court.com/lordlyon/556.html

This is notable on this forum because, I believe, Mr Dennis was born on our side of the pond. There have not been many American-born heralds in Britain.

Does Ormond Pursuivant have a coat of arms?  If so what is the blazon?  Is an emblazon available on the internet?  What is the origin of the "Ormond" designation?  Why this name?

Ormond’s personal arms can be seen on the HSS website. As far as I know the office has not yet had a badge devised for it but the badges of other Scottish officers at arms together with a list of the six heralds and six pursuivants (only three of each active at any time) can also be found on the HSS site here.

Ormond(e) is a castle at Avoch in the Black Isle and the title Earl of Ormonde was initially borne by the Black Douglases. Ormonde was later used as the designation for two Marquisates in the Scots royal family and as an Earldom for the Red Douglases. All the titles are extinct.

Whether Ormond(e) Pursiuvant was originally a private herald to the Black Douglases taken into the royal household when they fell in 1455, I don’t know, but it seems likely. The Douglases certainly made considerable use of heraldic propaganda in the 15th century.

From the HSS site:

Quote:

http://heraldry-scotland.com/copgal/albums/userpics/10001/MDDennis.jpg

Mark D Dennis, BA, LLB, JD, FSA Scot, Advocate

Arms: Per fess Gules and Ermine a pale invected counterchanged, three Danish battle axes Or.

Crest: An Opinicus sejeant Gules powdered with ermine spots, feathered and beaked Or, langued and armed Azure.

Motto: REGARD MY ACTS

Matriculated: The Court of the Lord Lyon 30th November 2000. Lyon Register, volume 82, folio 70.

The invected pale differences these arms as the third son’s off the main line. Dennises originating from the South West of England have borne some combination of the three axes for centuries. Nisbet quotes the Pont MSS for a Dennis branch - argent three battle axes sable within a border gules. The surname appears to originate from le Danais, the Dane, and the axes may be thought a rather remote pun. The shield per fess Gules and Ermine a pale counterchanged three Danish axes Or is recorded for the descendents of Arthur William Dennis, the armiger’s grandfather.

The heraldic Opinicus is rarely met with. It is the gryphon of the Classical age. It is often seen in Greek and Roman decoration. It is distinguised from the heraldic griffon in having a lion’s four legs instead of an eagle’s fore legs. The ermine spots were added by our erstwhile Lyon, Sir Malcolm Innes, possibly as a decorous and certainly decorative difference.

The motto answers that of my father, ESSE QUAM VIDERI, (be as you seem), while posing a pun on the axes of the arms

Side note: ESSE QUAM VIDERI is also the motto of the great state of North Carolina and, as a native Tar Heel, I have always understood it to mean to be rather than to seem.

Gentlemen,

Thank you both for the information.  Nice to see another person from the New World being honored in such a way.
