As apart of my wedding project that most of you are aware of, I found that my sister-in-law’s husband family has arms.

Sable, on a chevron, between three stars Or, three lions rampant gardant Sable.

I asked him about the origins of the arms and he said he wasn’t sure. I put in search strings in Google hoping to find an image or a proper blazon, but didn’t come across anything. I searched Burke’s and nothing came up either. With that I wanted to present it to the group and see if there was any further information that might be out there to ensure that these arms aren’t from a bucket shop or assumed by someone else.

As always, any help is appreciated.

I wanted to bump this thread to see if anyone could aide in finding the orgin of these arms.

I spoke with the Barrett’s this weekend and was informed that the arms were "found" during a trip to Ireland in the late 80’s, but not these arms. The one that was claimed was the red and white with "lines and bars" as it was put (I didnt see it). The attached design was attached to a glassware set, but no one knows where that came from.

My searches have resulted in nothing, but I thought maybe someone out there might be able to shed light on this. The family history points that they are form a humble origin as the family history starts with a poor man leaving Cork Ireland and moving to Illinois.

Any help would be appreciated!

Michael, there are any number of references to the name Barrett in The county families of the United Kingdom, or, Royal manual of the titled and untitled aristocracy of Great Britain and Ireland, Crozier’s General Armory, Armorial Families: A Directory of Coat-Armour and General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

However, there is now way of knowing if Mr. Barrett is entitled to use arms granted to armigerous families bearing the name Barrett without a clear knowledge of his family history and descendancy, through the male line.

Richard,

From the research I’ve done, they are not entitled. The first records of the family come from a daylabourer who stowed away on a ship from Cork, Ireland to the Easr Coast. What I need assistance with is where the arms I attached in the initial post hail from. I’ve searched through the 40 or so reference books I have and via internet searches and found nothing. There is a very good chance I have missed it, but I thought some extra eyes and experience might help narrow the search.

There is a slim chance that the arms I posted were created specifically for the Barrett line sometime in the past 30 years and perhaps never registered properly or at all.

My apologies Michael, I think I misunderstood your request.

None of the sites I mentioned are published within the past thirty years. If you would like to search them I can provide links, and the sites are indexed, however they would require a sub to Ancestry.co.uk to view.

Richard,

I have a subscription to Ancestry, so I might be able to check them out.

I will give these a go. I wasn’t aware Ancestry offered this service, so if for nothing else I have a great resource to utilize. Thanks!
